The Right Order To Apply Skincare Products

Visiting a beauty store can be confusing, there are so many products to choose from and it is not easy to pick the one meant for your skin. And, if you manage to find the best skincare products then it is equally important to use them in the correct order. Yes, you need to apply your skincare products in a definitive order!

The rule: Thin to thick!

This rule sounds simple-Use the lightest or the thinnest product first followed by the thicker one. However, with so many products in your skincare routine, it can get difficult to understand and follow this rule.  Should you apply the serum before your moisturizer or after it? Should a scrub be used before or after using a cleanser?

Sounds complicated? Don’t worry! Keep reading this post to know more!

The Right Order To Apply Skincare Products

Why Is It Important To Apply Skincare Products In The Correct Order?

The answer is simple! To maximize the benefits of each product.

Lighter water-based products are used before thicker ones. This will ensure that they penetrate deep into the layers of the skin without any hindrance. For example, your sunscreen will be diluted if a moisturizer is applied over it and will not provide proper sun protection. Spot treatment will not be effective if it has to penetrate multiple layers of heavy oil-based lotions.

The Right Order To Apply Skincare Products

Now that you know the importance of layering your skincare, follow this step by step guide to ensure that you use your products in the right order!

Cleanser: Start your day with a cleanser! It is important to clean all the impurities from your skin before you start applying other products. Although a quick cleanse can work in the morning, a makeup remover is essential in the evening to get rid of makeup and sunscreen. A great way of preparing your skin for the next step is double cleansing which involves using a cleansing oil followed by a cleanser. Cleansing oil helps in removing dirt and oil without stripping the skin of its natural oils while a cleanser completes the process by thoroughly cleaning every impurity. You can also try using micellar water on your face.

Scrub: Use a scrub after cleansing your skin to get rid of dead cells. Regular scrubbing is important to keep skin healthy and glowing. However, a scrub should not be used more than once or twice a week. Over-exfoliating can irritate your skin and cause it to lose its natural moisture.

Toner:  Toners have acquired a bad reputation because of many alcohol-based products available in the market. However, the good news is that you have a variety of gentle toners to choose from. All you have to do is to get what suits your skin!

A toner cleanses every residue of oil and dirt from the skin. In addition to this, it maintains the pH level of the skin and helps in the easy absorption of serum or moisturizer.

Spot Treatment: Spot treatment should be applied before using any other product to receive its full benefits. Once you have applied the cream, allow it to sit for three-five minutes and then apply a serum.

Serum: A serum is one of the most important steps in your beauty routine and it is important to choose one that addresses the specific needs of your skin. Serums usually contain a very high percentage of active ingredients and a little amount can give you healthier looking skin. Since most serums have a light consistency, they are easily absorbed into the skin and should be used before moisturizers.

Eye Cream: Like serums, eye creams are thin and should be applied before moisturizer to allow maximum penetration. And, if you do not use an eye cream then you must reconsider your decision. The skin around the eyes is delicate and needs special attention. An eye cream prevents dryness and the appearance of fine lines by nourishing the skin.

Moisturizer: Another important skincare product, a moisturizer is not just important for hydrating the skin. It keeps the skin healthy and helps in delaying signs of aging.  Include a moisturizer or a face cream in your daily routine to keep your skin healthy.

Sunscreen: Finally, the last step in your skincare routine! It is important to ensure that no skincare product goes over a sunscreen. You can combine the last two steps by using a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher. However, if you are using a moisturizer without SPF, then you should wait for a few minutes before applying a sunscreen.

A sunscreen should be used 20 minutes before stepping out in the sun and should be reapplied every 2 hours.

Are you applying your skincare products in the correct order? Always remember to follow this golden rule- Thin to Thick. Your skin will thank you!

I don’t use all of those products but it’s good to know. I have some product that was a gift (I guess my sister’s way of saying I look old) and I have no idea what to do with it. I will have to pull it out again and see how it works.

  6. Karolina | But, First, Tea!

I don’t have any problem with the order, as I only remove my make up and then apply moisturizer. Well, now also a serum but that’s a no-brainer. I will have to read some more about the other steps – I have a feeling maybe I should revisit my minimalistic idea;)

I’ll remember this, I’ve never considered which order I use things in before! I’m not using any skincare products at the moment as I’m all out of moisturiser, and my skin is suffering for it, I must get some, reading you post has reminded me.

This post is very useful. Sometimes we are in such a hurry to get our day started we opt for only one or two of these skin care steps. That is not a good idea, and the results will soon be apparent on our face. Back to basics!

Wow I don’t use all of this stuff. For the most part it’s noxzema and then cocoa butter lotion lol It’s been my regime for about 15 years lol I did recently get into exfoliating and that has been neat. My face feels amazing afterwards. I do it 1-2 times a week.

For the past few months I have been using Micellar wipes from Bioderma for cleansing in the evening, and find that it is very gentle and not drying at all even when I don’t follow it with any moisturizer. In the mornings I tend to wash with foaming cleanser or light exfoliater to get rid of any accumulated overnight oiliness and then moisturize with Bioderma on the cheeks and eyes and a lighter gel on the T-Zone.
